Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country

PLEASE NOTE: THIS TRAINING IS OPEN TO ALL PEOPLES, AND HAS RACGP CPD ACCREDITATION FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have walked the vast lands we call Australia for 60,000 years.

Prior to colonisation, there were hundreds of tribal groups. Each identified as custodians of an area, which is 21st-century is referred to as their Country. For those tens of thousands of years First Nation peoples have delivered a Welcome to Country ceremony and an Acknowledgement of Country ritual as one tribal group sought to enter the lands of another.

Colonisation did not wipe out this protocol. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continued it, but usually away from the public eye.

This Welcome ceremony took – and continues to take - many forms. It can be spoken, sung, performed, and there might be a Smoking Ceremony, or it could be a combination of all or some of these elements.

In this training you will receive practical training around, and deep insights into, the requirements around Welcome to Country, either as an organisation requiring this ceremony, or an individual or group delivering the ceremony as per the accepted protocols.

You also will receive training in development and delivery of Acknowledgement of Country.
